Dr. Steven Maxwell

Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium

Dr. Steven Maxwell is Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at Kansas State University. In addition, he teaches courses in brass techniques, music technology, and history of rock and roll.  Dr. Maxwell also performs with the KSU Faculty Brass Quintet and is the director of the KSU Tuba Euphonium Ensemble.


Dr. Maxwell is an active clinician, adjudicator, and soloist throughout the United States and has given solo recitals throughout the country including at the 2007 Great Plains Tuba Euphonium Conference, 2005 Rocky Mountain States Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference and the 2003 Great Plains Tuba Euphonium Conference.  Maxwell has also recently made solo appearances with The University of St. Thomas Concert Band in St. Paul, MN, the Kansas State University Symphony Band, and the Kansas State University Concert Band. He has held the position of principal tuba of the Chautauqua Festival Orchestra in New York and the Central Iowa Symphony and has been a member of the Kansas City Puccini Festival Orchestra and the award winning Fountain City Brass Band.


The Kansas State University Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Maxwell, has also been quite active. Recent performances have included the 2007 Kansas Music Educators Association Conference, the 2007 and 2003 Great Plains Tuba Euphonium Conference, the 2005 Rocky Mountain States Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, and the 2005 Las Vegas Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference. 


Dr. Maxwell received the Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He also received his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music in Education from Kansas State University and Iowa State University respectively. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha, Kansas Music Educators Association, and the International Tuba Euphonium Association. He has published articles in both the International Tuba and Euphonium Association Journal and the College Music Symposium and is the webmaster for the ITEA Military Bands Database.
