Teaching interests

Courses taught: Sedimentology-Stratigraphy (GEOL 630), Sequence Stratigraphy (GEOL 790), Computer-Applications to Geology (GEOL 790), and Introductory Physical Geology (GEOL 100) and Historical Geology (GEOL 300).

Teaching Philosophy: Courses taught are occasionally painful, but rarely fatal. All classes involve weekly quizzes, rather than tests. All classes involve a final examination (during finals weeks) that involves recycled, weekly-quiz questions. Upper-level classes attempt to involve problem-solving applications rather than traditional, rote memorization. Thus, the quizzes for these classes are open-book, open-note, and open-supplemental materials. The same is not true for 300- and lower-level classes, which are taught in a more-traditional manner (i.e., closed notes and books during quizzes).

Schedule: Sequence Stratigraphy will be taught during Fall 1996 semester. Computer-Applications to Geology will be taught during Fall 1997 semester. Thus, these classes are offered every other year. Sedimentology-Stratigraphy is taught every spring semester. The scheduling for the other classes is variable and depends upon departmental needs.
