Welcome to my webpage

I am a Professor of Sociology at Kansas State University, where I have been since I received my Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995.

I am currently appointed as Executive Director of the KSU Office for the Advancement of Women in Science and Engineering (KAWSE).  I am also a co-principal investigator on a National Science Foundation ADVANCE PAID (Partnerships for Adaptation, Implementation, and Dissemination) grant to study the transition between associate and full professor for faculty (mostly) in the science, engineering, and math disciplines. I just ended a five year term as editor of the journal Gender & Society - which as of 2011 was ranked number four among 129 journals in Sociology.  You can find out more about all of these projects at the research link above.

Effective July 2012, I am leaving KSU to take a position at Rutgers University.  I will be Director of the Center for Women and Work and Professor of Labor Studies and Employment Relations.

I am the author of At Work in the Iron Cage: The Prison as Gendered Organization (NYU Press, 2003), The Gender of Crime (Rowman & Littlefield, 2011), and the editor of Gender and Prisons (Ashgate Press, 2005).  My research interests are in the areas of gender and work, gender and social control, and social history.  I have written many articles and chapters in the first two areas, and read and write about the latter when I can.  See the research link for more, or my curriculum vitae.

Though my teaching load has been somewhat reduced by administrative responsibilities in recent years, at the undergraduate level I regularly teach The Sociology of Work and Women and Crime.  At the graduate level I teach Gender Differentiation and Inequality (which is a course on the intersections of gender, race, class and sexuality) and Qualitative Research Methods.  See the teaching link above for more.

I enjoy traveling and taking photos along the way - see the about me link for more.  The photos above are from closer to home - the Konza Prairie - a preserved stand of tallgrass prairie just south of Manhattan, KS.
