Upton Genealogy
Lineage of S. J. Upton
Created 09 June 2000

The Upton genealogy has been relatively well researched. In the late 1800's, William Henry Upton compiled most of the known literature on the Upton lineage, which included mass mailing queries to every known Upton within North America, for his book entitled "Genealogical Collections for an Upton Family History," 1893, Mitchell and Hughs, London, 518 pp. One remarkable feature was the discovery that even though nearly two dozen Upton's had immigrated into North America by that time, a single lineage accounted for over 85% of all Upton's recorded in North America. More recently, a CD ROM version of the monograph was complied which comprises over 2,200 pages of text and images. This updated version corrected numerous errors extant within the 1893 book and located a number of Upton's that had been overlooked. Over a 10 year period, the author actually checked all U.S. census records through the year 1900! This CD ROM may be ordered directly from the author: Patrick C. Hill, 1008 Regency Dr., Acworth, GA 30102. If you have absolutely nothing to do, you may wish to participate in the Upton genealogy forum or visit the Upton page still under construction.

  1. John Upton (1st generation in North America)
    1. Upton genealogy code: 1A
    2. born: 1622 (other accounts state around 1625); Newton Ferrers, Devonshire, England
    3. parents: tentatively William Upton and Amye Loves; Newton Ferrers, Devonshire England
    4. married: unknown date; one account states prior to 1643, another prior to 1649, one in 1650 (probably the most accurate date, supplied by Deacon Joseph Eaton of North Reading sometime after 1862), and another erroneously in 1655; Danvers, Essex, MA
    5. spouse: Eleanor Stuart; born 1629-1630, Salem, Essex, MA; thought to be the daughter of James Stuart who was born about 1599 in Scotland; she died in Reading, MA (one account states after 1675, another after 1699). The last name "Stuart" is tentative. Some genealogists believe that Eleanor may have been the 2nd wife of John.
    6. died: 11 July 1699; North Reading, Middlesex county, MA
    7. immigration: It has been hypothesized that he may have been the passenger, "Jo Lupton," who embarked at London on the Primrose, 27 July 1635, and written into the manifest by a clerk that he was age "25." This would mean that he would have made the voyage when he was 10-13 years old and that the age recorded in the manifest by the clerk was in error (these types of errors were very common, however). Legal records show John Upton was a very young "bound" apprentice until 1639 (or 1638) under Edward Winslow of Salisbury, MA, at which time a one time fellow apprentice and possible childhood friend, John Askew, agreed to pay for John Upton's release. Another early erroneous account states that John Upton was a scottish prisoner captured at the battle of Dunbar in 1650 by Cromwell and was one of 200 shipped to Boston. However, Upton is an English rather than Scottish name, he is clearly present in Massachusetts around 1639, and he is referred to as a "lad" in the historical documents.
    8. other: In 1645 there is a record of him being constable of an unknown town (perhaps Lynn, MA; sometimes also called Hammersmith after a factory there). His name appears on a deed dated 26 December 1658 which conveys to him 40 acres of land in Salem by Henry Bullock of Salem. An additonal 80 acres were added on 6 April 1662, and 40 more acres on 27 November 1671. The entire farm was to be called "Wood Hill" (later "Upton Hill"). Over a 29 year period, he made 19 land purchases and received a grant from a town (Reading?). In Salem, there are a number of court records bearing his name and variations of his name including John Ripton, John Ribton, John Rubton, and commonly John Repton. In one instance he is also confused with the Scotsman John Boyd, which may have also initiated an early myth that the Upton's were originally from Scotland. The general recorded view is that John Upton was active, self-reliant, self-respecting, a liberal, and having little sympathy for the dominating religeous fundamentalist persecution of the colony.

Victor, NY (named after Claudius Victor Boughton; a relative). James bought some land and built a log house, which was accidently burnt down by his brother David as he tried to dry flax. They then built another log house, and after that a frame house. This was then moved back and formed the woodshed of the eventual mansion house built on the same spot in the winter of 1817-1818. James Upton was an active citizen of Victor, NY and held a number of public offices including being elected as overseer of the poor 06 April 1813, one year after the town was founded. 4. married: first marriage 8 February 1840 in Victor, NY; Maria Amanda Hollister, eldest child of Joseph and Amanda (Adams) Hollister, was born 13 August 1818 in Danby, NY and died of pneumonia four days after childbirth 24 December 1858 in Sacramento, CA. Second marriage 29 March 1860 in East Avon, NY; Marietta Bryan, daughter of Amasa Bryan and Alida Ann Ketcham, was born at Schaghticoke, NY.
    5. died: unknown; known to be alive in Washington DC in 1888.
    6. other: His father and mother insured William a sound education, although he did not attend College. During the Fall of 1837, when he was teaching school in Bloomfield, NY, he developed a severe case of pneumonia and nearly died. He then left Victor, NY on 24 January 1838 and went first to La Grange, County, Indiana to work for one Nathan Jenks as a surveyor of a canal necessary to build a new city. However, his employer was an avid fundamentalist and abolishionist and attempted to convert young William much to his annoy. In addition, his employer failed to fulfill promises or contracts, or pay William adequately, so the youth moved to Clinton County, Michigan where his father owned some wilderness land in the Victor township (named after Victor, NY). After surveying and clearing his fathers land, as well as additional lands he and his brother James secured, he planted crops and built a log cabin. In August, 1838 he developed "Michigan ague" (Plasmodium vivax malaria) and returned the following month to Victor, NY to recover. By October he was sufficiently recovered and took charge of the school district in west Victor village, NY. In September, 1839 he is known to have been employed as a surveyor in the construction of a canal near Buffalo, NY. However, he was still of poor health for about a year and one-half and during this time studied law. He also met and married Maria Amanda Hollister during this time, and moved back to the township of Victor, Clinton county, Michigan where he began to practice law while improving his lands. Between 1840 and 1845, he was supervisor of Victor township; 1841-1845 surveyor of Clinton county; 1845-1847 county treasurer; and a member of the state legislature that made Lansing the capitol. He was appointed District Attorney for Ingham county in 1848, and was elected to the same office for two year terms in 1849 and 1851. He moved to De Witt, Michigan in 1845, and to Lansing in 1847. He decided to move west, resigned his office and, on 01 April 1852, moved his family to Weaverville, California. In 1855 he moved to Sacramento, CA and in 1856 became a member of the state legislature. Among others, he played a significant role in 1861 keeping southern elements from carrying the state out of the Union. He was elected to the office of Prosecuting Attorney of Sacramento County in 1861 and held the office until 1864. Although he was urged to run for the U.S. Congress, his family developed ill health in California (pneumonia) and it was that climate that was attributed to the death of his first wife and three of his children. Thus, in the Spring of 1865 he moved his family to Portland, OR. He immediately took a position at the bar, and very shortly was elected to the state legislature. He was well known to have a contempt for corruption and deceit, and during this time in the legislature he is attributed with elevating and purifying politics in Oregon. In 1867 he was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Oregon, and in 1868 was elected to that position for six years. He became Chief Justice in 1872, and he is credited with simplifying and systematizing the practice in the courts of the state. Due to financial reversals because of the depression of 1873, he declined to run for a second term and resumed his legal practice. In 1877, he was appointed by President Hayes to the position as Second Comptroller of the Treasury of the United States and moved his family to Washington, DC. He began his new duties on 01 October 1877. After President Cleveland was inaugurated, he resigned his position and on 01 June 1885 resumed his legal profession. William W. Upton is remembered as a student of learning, versed in law, mathematics, and he had a good knowledge of Latin, French, and Spanish. He was never defeated in an election.

As with many, the depression of 1873 ended his business and he spent a year upon a farm in Washington county. In 1874 he resumed his law practice in Oregon City. However, he disliked his practice as he felt that he supplied the brains for dishonest individuals to utilize the legal profession to prey upon the unfortunate. Thus, in 1876 when a tract of native american reservation came open to settlement, he purchased a large tract of land on the Nestucca Bay and retired from his practice. He immediately moved there and founded Oretown, OR. The 1880 census of Tillamook county lists his occupation as "fisherman." George Upton never attended College or any sort of professional school. During the war years (WWI), he was a member of the 3rd infantry, K company, of the Oregon National Guard. Following his marriage to Mary Curtis, they moved to Forest Grove, OR in 1923 and for a time also had a summer cottage near the family homestead on the Nestucca on the Oregon Coast. He had a building constructed at 214 A Street South and started a raw fur dealer business; he also cruised timber on the side. In 1940, he purchased Olallie Lake Resort in the Mount Hood National Forest in the Cascade mountains. He and his wife operated the seasonal business in summer months for 23 years until selling the business to their son Edward in 1963 and retiring. Sometime during the late 1940's or early 1950's, he suffered a stroke which partially paralyzed one side of his body and forced him to utilize a cane. He and his wife were republicans and always voted a straight line party ticket. George Edward Upton is remembered by his grandchildren as a gentle, quiet man with simple needs.
    7. children: Edward Jay Upton; born 30 January 1924 in Portland, OR; died 06 April 2000 in Forest Grove, OR

  9. Edward Jay Upton (9th generation in North America)
    1. Upton genealogy code: 1AKDDJEBGA.
    2. born: 30 January 1924; Portland, OR
    3. parents: George Edward Upton and Mary Inez Curtis; Forest Grove, OR
    4. married: First wife Helen Clarissa Karle (born 09 February 1923 in Grand Island, NE; daughter of James H. Karle and Ida Karle, originally from Grand Island, NE; died 05 August 1987 of cancer) on 27 November 1949 in Portland, OR; second wife Betty Dawson of Hillsboro, OR on 19 February 1993 in Hillsboro, OR
    5. died: 06 April 2000; Forest Grove, OR of heart failure. The death certificate also lists lymphoma as a contributing cause, but following chemotherapy for the cancer no signs of lymphoma were present within two years of his death
    6. other: Edward Jay Upton preferred to be called "Ed," resided his entire life in Forest Grove, OR, and never attended College. As a youth, he found fishing and hunting more preferable to school and received only passing marks. He spent his summers on the Oregon Coast with his parents in their family summer cottage on the Nestucca until 1940 when his father purchased Olallie Lake Resort in the Oregon Cascades. He enjoyed the company of his father, but his relationship with his mother was never close as she demanded hard work and administered frequent discipline. In 1942 he joined the Army Air Force and served as an automobile and truck mechanic throughout the South Pacific, including the Phillippines and Japan. After WWII, he attended body and fender school and by profession repaired automobiles in the winter months and worked at Olallie Lake Resort during the summer. In 1963 he purchased the resort from his parents and became sole owner. When Garwood H. Ostrander, husband of Mary Etta (Upton) Ostrander, died in 1963 he became executor of the estate and was paid $5,000 which he later used as a down payment on "Ed Upton's Body Shop" in Forest Grove. Following a hip replacement operation, he retired from body work in 1978 and sold the resort in 1980. Edward Upton shot small bore rifle with the Forest Grove rifle club and earned the NRA rank of Master shooter, winning numerous medals and trophies over a 30 year period. Edward Jay Upton was an excellent provider for his family, normally working at least 6 days a week, but spent a minimal amount of time with his children. He believed it to be the job of the wife to raise the children and take care of the household. As typical of most Upton's in this lineage, Edward Upton was unusually honest, believing that ones word was as important as any legal contract. He had a strong dislike for anyone that lied to him. In later years, fishing became an obsession and he and his second wife Betty traveled throughout Oregon in their motor home in search of the best fishing spots. His friends and family remember him as someone who would do anything for a close friend.

    5. died: Still living as far as I know
    6. other: Steve Upton lived with his parents in Forest Grove, OR throughout his childhood, except in summer months when he and his sister worked for the family business at Olallie Lake Resort. Over these years his father fully expected that his son to be versed in all aspects of the family business including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete work, and even tree felling. During his junior and senior years of High School, he shot small bore rifle with his father on the Forest Grove rifle team and gained sharpshooter status. He left for College just prior to receiving NRA expert status. In the summer of his 18th birthday, he went to work for the U.S. Forest Service and spent 8 summers on a fire crew at the Clackamas Ranger District on the Mount Hood National Forest. He was a member of the Helitack (helicopter) crew during the latter 4 years and gained a rating of Helitack foreman in his final year. During the school year, he attended Oregon State University and received a BS in Zoology in 1975. He also completed training in scuba, took a private course in sky diving, and earned a red cross instructor certification. Between 1976 and 1978, he was enrolled as a non-degree student at Oregon State University where he developed an interest in infectious diseases and concurrently worked evenings as a bartender. Between 1979 and 1981 he lived in Albuquerque, NM and earned an MS in Parasitology and Electron Microscopy from the University of New Mexico under Dr. Donald W. Duszynski. Just prior to completing his MS degree, he married his first wife who he had met many years before while working in the Forest Service. The couple lived for about 6 months in Silverton, OR where his wife had a job teaching school. During this time he worked in a factory making doors for mobile homes. After being accepted into graduate school, the couple moved to Auburn, AL. After receving his PhD in Zoology-Entomology at Auburn University in 1983 and specializing in parasitology and cell biology under the direction of Dr. William L. Current, plus working an extra year as a post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Upton received a non- tenure track job at the University of Texas-El Paso. The time in graduate school had put a significant strain on the marriage and in July of 1986 the couple were divorced. In August of 1986, Dr. Upton accepted a position in the Division of Biology at Kansas State University and became a full Professor in the Division of Biology in 1995. In 1990 he married Brenda Sue (Roebuck) Oppert in Manhattan, KS. They had one child prior to their divorce in 1997and shared in custody. Unlike his father before him, Steve Upton believes strongly in the importance of a father participating in the life of his children. His professional interests include parasitic diseases of humans and animals, and by the year 2000 he had published over 200 book chapters and scientific papers in refereed journals. In 1996 he was awarded the Henry Baldwin Ward Medal by the American Society of Parasitologists as the most outstanding parasitologist in North America.
