Links of Interest in Composition, Electronic Music, Music Theory
This collection is far from comprehensive: suggestions for addition/improvement and broken link reports are welcome: contact cweston@ksu.edu.
Composition:
Organizations
Explore these three sites (above) and you will find links to and information about many opportunities and resources for composers. There is a lot out there: you just need to find it. Another particularly good collection of resource links is the Resources for Composers and Contemporary Music page at the International Alliance of Women in Music site.
Notation and Score/Part Preparation
Keith Hamel's Opus 1 Music, Inc.: home of my favorite little-known notation softwares, NoteWriter and NoteAbility Pro.
Mass-market printing/copying has come a long way, but if you really want it done right, your best bet is a business that specializes in music reproduction, such as Judy Green Music, Valle Music, or Aztec Music Papers. These are also great sources for manuscript papers, papers for printing in traditional music sizes, and other composer supplies.
The Major Orchestra Librarians Association Score and Part Preparation Guide
Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra's excellent Guidelines for Scores and Parts (a ten-page .pdf document)
Marco Paper, a good source for papers, cover stock, etc.
VPC, Inc.'s Music Binding System: a binding device designed exclusively for printed music
Music Theory:
Organizations:
Society for Music Theory (includes useful bibliographic source search facilities)
Journals
Perspectives of New Music: The leading academic journal devoted to new music and composition.
Music Theory Spectrum: The journal of the Society for Music Theory
New Music:
Publishers
CD Labels
HB Direct: My favorite retail source for ''classical'' CDs
Electro-acoustic Music:
Organizations
The International Computer Music Association: who also administer the important Consortium to Distribute Computer Music (CDCM) recording series.
SEAMUS (The Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the U.S.)
Software
Csound.com page: all things csound-related, including many useful links and downloads.
Computer Music Links by Phil Burk: a nice collection of software links
Cycling '74: Home of Max/MSP
macmusic.org: a good collection of shareware and freeware audio software for Macs
Shareware Music Machine: another collection of shareware
Journals
Studios
CCRMA ("Karma"): The Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University
University of Washington centers: CARTAH (Center for Advanced Research Technologies in the Arts and Humanities) and the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media
University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios (a nice collection of orchestral instrument samples is here)
