[26] Patrick Cody seems to have been a very interesting person. In the1871 Census he and his wife Margaret Coffey were living with theirfour children on the farm of his father, also Patrick Cody. Patrickwas a shoemaker, and Schedule 6 of the 1871 Census shows him with $50of fixed capital, $300 of floating capital, 600 lbs of leather of $300value. The Census says he produced "boots and shoes" of $600 value.The 1881 Census lists him as "Free Thinker" in its religion column. Atthe time of his second marriage, to Mary Ann Murray, he apparently wascompelled to sign a statement promising to bring up any children ofthat marriage in the Catholic Faith. This statement was pinned to theback of the page containing the church's marriage record. (PatrickGormely examined this document and the rusty pin holding it in July1993 at the rectory in Port Lambton, Ontario.) The obituary at thetime of his death mentioned his independent thinking.
