Anthropology in Italy: Continuity and Modernity
ANTH 522/ANTH 521,
Special Topics
3 credit hours
May
23-June 13,
2005
(approx. dates)
This is a three-week
course in Italy open to all students interested in anthropology. The only
prerequisites are an introductory course in either archaeology (ANTH
260) or
cultural anthropology (ANTH 200 or 204). Students will spend the
majority of
the time living with families in the ancient city of Orvieto and carrying
out mini-projects on contemporary
Italian culture or the interpretation of the past. We will also take
field
trips to archaeological sites and contemporary cities (Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, and Rome). The focus will
be on cultural immersion
and understanding both continuity and change in Italian life. Students
will
learn basic ethnographic techniques as they participate in what is
intended to
be an ongoing community study. This will be an interesting and unusual
experience very different from most traditional college classroom
courses. Costs
will include tuition and fees, most costs for room and board, travel
within Italy, admissions to sites, and guides. Students
will be individually responsible for arranging air travel (we can
recommend
low-cost discounters).
