Class Meeting Time:  Our regular meeting time is 3:30-4:30 Thursday afternoons in Rm 221 Ackert.  The first meeting is January 22, 2004. Student seminars will also be presented in this room, unless there is a conflict with other Division seminars.  In the case of room conflicts, we will schedule another room (likely Rm 120 Ackert) and you will be notified in advance.

Course Objectives:  The objective of the course is to train new graduate students in the presentation of professional seminars and some of the mechanics of being a scientist. The course is divided into two parts.  During the first part of the course, we will provide instruction in choosing a seminar topic, organizing and developing a talk, the effective use of graphics and slides for a scientific presentation, and techniques for being an effective speaker. We will also cover the presentation of scientific information in a poster format, and discuss preparing research results for publication and grant proposals. A lecture on obtaining scientific positions (e.g., creating C.V.'s and interview tips) will be given. During the second part of the course, students will present seminars providing a synopsis of a specific area of ecological research.  The general theme for 2003 presentations is "Ecological Responses to Global Change". The presentations will be evaluated by faculty and other students.  Based on the results of these evaluations, and feedback from the course instructors, students will write a short self-evaluation.

Grading:  Course grades will be assigned based on the quality of the presentations, and the results of the seminar evaluations.

Schedule of Activities:  A tentative schedule of activities is posted below. A more detailed list of topics and dates of student presentations will be provided within the first few weeks of the semester.
