Introduction to Secondary School
Participant Presentations and Lesson Plans

The secondary teachers of the N.E.H. People, Prairies, and Plains Institute were from diverse educational disciplines. Using the information and resources provided by the institute staff and speakers, the teachers researched, wrote and shared their ideas. The following lessons plans were the results of those efforts.

One unifying theme emerged from the body of work done at the institute and during the subsequent school year: “the development of a sense of place.”

The following lesson plans and summaries make connections among the usually isolated subject areas. These connections increase the students’ awareness of environmental history and what they need to know about it, why they need to know about it, and what it has to do with their “sense of place” in the grand scheme.
