Abstract

The 400-4000 cm-1 IR and the 50-3500 cm-1 Raman spectra of the title compds. in condensed phases indicate that iodomethylcyclopropane (I) exists solely in the nonsym. gauche conformation in all states of matter and that epiiodohydrin (II) exists as a mixt. of 2 gauche conformations in the liq. phase; the most stable liq. conformation is the only one populated in the solid phase. The enthalpy difference between the conformers is also detd. for II. Cis conformations of I and II were not obsd. due to strong steric interactions between the I atoms and the ring b-H atoms. The vibrations of I and II are assigned.
