Writing Assignment

Chinua Achebe's "A Civil Peace"

There is a maxim that functions as a motif in the story, appearing 3 times.  Explain the various meanings it takes on in virtue of the distinct particular contexts in which it appears.  Among the matters you will want to cover:  What does the protagonist use it to express?  Does it take on a deeper meaning for the reader than it has for the protagonist?
