Course Requirements

Short papers combined: 30%; Paper Proposal: 20%; Research Paper 50%. If final paper is revised after discussion, grade will consist of the average of the two drafts.

Aug. 24: Introduction: Why social history? What is social history?

31: Paradigms of Research on Work and the Industrial Revolution. Essay on four chapters of Lenard Berlanstein Additional essay on your intellectual interests and social history

Sept. 7: Feminist History as a research model. Essay on selected chapters from Catherine Hall. Extension of your personal essay.

14: How does one approach the social history of rural peoples? Essay on selected chapters from Richard Evans.

21: Date of meeting to be rescheduled to accommodate presentation of visiting lecturer, Dr. Axel Lubinski, Max-Planck Research Group for Agrarian History, Potsdam. Short essay on agrarian history, reading to be announced. Time reserved for investigation of resources for individual research projects.

28: Preliminary discussion of research topics. Urban history: reading from David Crew; corresponding essay.

Oct. 5: Readings and topics to be announced.

Discuss research proposals plus accompanying articles. Due Monday noon prior to Thursday seminar in mailboxes or by e-mail.
