Susan Arnold Elston Wallace

Susan E. Wallace (or Mrs. Lew Wallace, as she was often known) was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, on December 25, 1830. Her parents, Isaac C. and Maria E. Aiken Elston, were very wealthy and influential members of society. Susan was educated in Crawfordsville and Poughkeepsie, New York, and was by all accounts a very well-read woman for her time. Susan married Lew Wallace on May 6, 1852. They had one son, Henry Lane Wallace (b. February 17, 1853).

In her lifetime, Susan published six books, some of which had illustrations by Lew. She also published extensively in the literary magazines and newspapers of the day. Her first publication was "The Patter of Little Feet," an unsigned poem which appeared in the Cincinnati Daily Gazette on April 17, 1858.

Susan died October 1, 1907, two years after her husband. They are buried together at Oak Hill Cemetery in Crawfordsville.
