In her lifetime, Susan published six books, some of which had illustrations by Lew. She also published extensively in the literary magazines and newspapers of the day. Her first publication was "The Patter of Little Feet," an unsigned poem which appeared in the Cincinnati Daily Gazette on April 17, 1858.
Susan died October 1, 1907, two years after her husband. They are buried together at Oak Hill Cemetery in Crawfordsville.
